Academic Integrity - Avoiding Plagiarism

Academic integrity is the practice of maintaining ethics and values in research and publishing. Dishonest behaviors, such as cheating, plagiarism, falsification, and fabrication, are strictly unwelcome in research work.

Plagiarism denotes literary theft and it is a frightening word for researchers. An academic writer is not supposed to use other author’s content without due acknowledgement, citations and references. Plagiarism is best avoided because it leads to unwanted troubles for everyone involved with the work.

Dangers of plagiarism

Plagiarism leads to negative outcomes in the individual, ethical, professional, and legal spheres. Such negative outcomes include poor quality of content, stunted creativity, loss of reputation, academic penalty, suspension, expulsion, legal action, criminal action, and career damage.

Academicians accused of plagiarism would not be able to publish their works. Plagiarism in the medical field could result in loss of human lives. Monetary restitutions could cause a psychological scar in the reputation of scholars and educational institutions. Suspension or expulsion might prove to be an additional scar for students. Therefore, academicians and professional writers must find suitable ways of avoiding plagiarism.

How is plagiarism checked

Plagiarism is detected through online and offline software, such as Turnitin and Urkund. Some free software and websites aid in the detection of plagiarized content. The software scans the content and matches it with the published text, which is maintained in a repository. Similar content is highlighted as plagiarized text, which may require rewriting or paraphrasing.

Techniques to be used for reducing plagiarism
Plagiarism can be best avoided by using original content. However, if necessary, other authors’ content must be used with proper citations and references. Some definitions might require the verbatim presentation of the content, which could be presented in inverted quotation marks.
Paraphrasing is the process of restating other authors’ work in a differently worded and differently structured sentence, albeit without changing the original meaning. Sometimes, it is recommended to combine two or three sentences into a precise one. The original text could be rephrased in two or three different ways, among which the most suitable version could be utilized. Usage of synonyms is recommended for reducing plagiarism. It is advisable to change the sentence structure by re arranging and re ordering some phrases, terminologies, and listed items. Wordiness must be avoided during paraphrasing. Unintentional plagiarism caused by factual or technical content is generally accepted.
